Photographing Grizzlies (Safely)

I recently had the opportunity to photography Grizzly Bears in the wild for a second time and and the experience was amazing. The Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary, nestled in the remote wilderness of British Columbia, is a haven for wildlife photographers seeking to capture the raw beauty of grizzly bears in their natural habitat. Established in 1994 as Canada's first designated grizzly bear sanctuary, Khutzeymateen is home to a thriving population of these majestic creatures, making it one of the premier locations for grizzly bear photography.

Photographing grizzlies in Khutzeymateen is a unique experience that requires respect for both the environment and the bears. The sanctuary is accessible only by boat or floatplane, preserving its pristine condition and minimizing human impact. Photographers should prepare for a range of weather conditions and pack accordingly, as the area is known for its unpredictable climate.

The best time to photograph grizzlies in the Khutzeymateen is from late May to July/August, when the bears emerge from hibernation and later when the salmon starts to run. During this period, the bears can be seen foraging in the estuary (early season), fishing for salmon (later in the season), or simply enjoying the lush, green landscape. Patience is key, as observing and waiting for the perfect shot is part of the experience.

To ensure the safety of both the bears and photographers, you should only access the area with guided tours. There are only two guiding agencies that have permission to enter the estuary and these guides are knowledgeable about the bears' behavior as well as help you get the best angles all the while maintaining a safe distance.

Photographing grizzlies in the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Sanctuary is not just about getting the perfect shot—it's about immersing yourself in one of the last true wilderness areas and witnessing the power and grace of these incredible animals. For those passionate about wildlife photography, this sanctuary offers an unforgettable adventure.
